We Come Together (2022)

These drypoint prints, entitled River Series, are a series of works inspired through my deep affection for the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where I live. I love the cold, grey, monotone days the most when it’s bleak and raw. Out walking alone on the land standing still to listen to the sound of rain and wind is rapturous for me. These pieces formed out of time exploring the banks of the River Aire in the village of Airton on such a day. Looking into the water, I was drawn to its loudness and repeating rhythms. I prefer to work on quite a large scale that is perhaps a little unusual for print. The plates for this series, which are almost a metre wide, give me scope to work gesturally, this helps me to convey how I relate to the scale of the landscape and my place within it. The marks were made using a variety of objects including found stones from the river’s edge, old broken hacksaw blades, old carpet tacks and sandpaper. River Series was produced specially for the inaugural Art In the Dale exhibition of local artists at The Parish Church of St Michael the Archangel, Kirkby Malham, North Yorkshire in May 2022.
