Biography

My work centres on my passion for film and the ‘machinery’ of the cinematic environment.  Cinema has such a profound effect on me that at times I enter into a state where I sense I can physically feel the materiality of the world represented on screen.  These experiences are driven by, for example, the ‘consciousness’ of the moving camera as it moves through film space and the behaviour of light and darkness on screen as it translates into cinema space.  From such encounters my work takes the form of sculptures, cinematic installations, film, print and drawing.

I am a graduate of Bradford College of Art & Design and belong to a group of former arts students from the college called Artists United.  I am also a member of West Yorkshire Print Workshop based in Mirfield, West Yorkshire.

Recent exhibitions include New Horizons, a group exhibition of contemporary art by Artists United, Creative Arts Hub, Mirfield (2022); Art In The Dale, a group exhibition of contemporary art by leading Malhamdale artists, The Church of St. Michael The Archangel, Kirkby Malham (2022); Memoria: Memories of Light, a site-specific exhibition of four porcelain and light sculptures based on living memories of former mill workers, residency at Bradford College of Art & Design, joint exhibition of Bradford College of Art & Design student work inspired by the museum, publication of a collection of essays inspired by the museum by several Bradford College of Art & Design tutors, entitled Memoria: Histories, Memories, Representations, formation of a new archive of previously unseen materials, blue prints, documents, photographs, letters, etc from a descendant of the original mill owners, the Tempest family.
