Biography

My work centres on the forms and structures of filmic representation within the modern film theatre.  Cinema has such a profound effect on me that at times I enter into a state where I sense I can physically feel the materiality of the world represented on screen.  These experiences are driven by an intense sense of connection with the ‘consciousness’ of the moving camera.  I am also fascinated by the operation of the ‘machinery’ of the film theatre and the components that function together such as the way light or the lack of it coming off the screen simultaneously makes the auditorium light or dark.  From such ‘physical’ encounters my work takes the form of sculptures and cinematic installations that re-map moments I’ve seen on screen in real space and time in which the viewer can became an actual physical presence.  In my present work I am exploring the nature of light as a carrier of feelings. Unlike my earlier work which focused on projected or ‘exterior’ light, I have turned towards an exploration of the ‘interior’ where light radiates from within.  This interest has moved my area of study into the field of ceramics, and in particular the possibilities provided by porcelain, where I create work that is illuminated from the ‘inside’.  My work takes the form of sculptural pieces, often suspended in the air, that convey experience and thought.
