Pen drawing for a suspended sculptural porcelain and light work, 2017

This drawing is for a suspended porcelain sculptural light work of approximately one metre in diameter. Drawing a proposed piece of work enables me to visualise quite accurately how it might look when made. Such drawings help me to work through a number of design considerations, such as shape, in this instance a half-circle, size and surface texture. Although it’s a two-dimensional image this drawing conveys a strong sense of how the piece will function in real space. The actual sculpture will comprise hundreds of very fine lengths of hand-formed porcelain ‘needles’ arranged around a half-circular, internal architecture. The illumination will come from an array of LED lighting arranged internally between this architecture and the porcelain ‘needles’.
